The ten exhibited paintings work here as an installation in which Frances Aviva Blane seeks to explore a pictorial space where things go wrong visually. Blane has always made a virtue of the inelegant. Her facility with paint has never been more assured. Great viscous daubs of strawberry pink puncture and splash, coalescing uneasily amongst amorphous black shapes that dissolve and die. The ‘delinquent’ paintings were hang on carefully painted, ‘gallery like’ white walls; the concrete floor with its heavily ‘textured’ marks juxtaposing the surface of the paintings, emphasise further the unease and point to emotional upheaval.
